Company Profile

Stainton Metal are the UK’s largest manufacturer of Light Rail and Tramway poles with a track record second to none, detailed below are some of our recent project references
Manchester Light Rail,
Sheffield Super Tram,
Blackpool Tramway and Illumination Poles, and
Nottingham Express Transit Line.

In addition to our UK successes we have also supplied tramway projects in the City of Bilbao in Spain and the cities of Grenoble and Montpelier in France.

Tramway Poles appear to be a relatively easy structure to supply, however the simplicity of their structure is under pinned by complex 3 dimensional loading trees requiring considerable design expertise to analyse them correctly. The designer has to take into account wind loadings, line tensions, broken wire conditions, ice loading and even impact forces and this coupled with the need to provide a relatively stiff structure requires a considerable amount of design expertise.

Rather than working from just a set of design loadings, we prefer to work closely with the Network contractor to ensure that the correct and most economical solution is achieved every time.

Our expertise and manufacturing capabilities allows us to offer stepped tubular, conical, octagonal and polygonal alternatives and this coupled with planted root or flangeplated options allows us to offer the full range of poles. Over the past decade of working on Tramway Project schemes we have developed our manufacturing capabilities to cater for the ever-increasing range of poles required as demonstrated by our unique ability of being able to swage tubes of ø508 mm diameter. In addition to conventional tubular poles we have manufactured and supplied traditional H and I beam poles when required.
We are competitive across the full range of products.

Poles are usually hot dip galvanised after fabrication and with our in-house painting facility we are able to offer a range of corrosion protection systems as well as supplying a final top coat system.

Finally, our in-house testing facility gives us the opportunity to put design into practise adding another dimension to our capabilities.
