In 1978 Stainton Metal commenced manufacture of octagonal lighting columns at its factory based at Thornaby in the North East of England.

Originally Stainton was established as the UK manufacturing arm of Petitjean of France and following a successful MBO in 2001 is now an independently owned company.

Over the last 25 years we have continued to grow and diversify and are now the UK’s largest manufacturer of street lighting columns, high masts, tramway and mobile telephone structures, distribution and transmission poles. Working in galvanised steel, aluminium and stainless steel, with poles being

produced in octagonal, conical, polygonal, stepped tubular, square and even triangular sections, at Stainton Metal we cover every design and material currently used in the market.

Our success is firmly based upon a simple business philosophy:-
“ To respond to the needs of customers with products and service that sets new standards of performance and at the same time continually striving to improve them to meet the needs of tomorrow”

As we enter our 25th year of manufacture we continue to concentrate on what we know best: - simply the design and manufacture of poles and columns.

Manufacture
The Stainton Metal plant covers an area of 14 acres (7ha) with over 100,000 sq.feet (9300m²) dedicated
to manufacturing facilities. We have 2 manufacturing facilities with the main plant dedicated to the production of lighting column products and the Engineering Division manufacturing
heavy bespoke structures.Employing over 150 people on these 2 sites we have a manufacturing capacity well in excess of 200,000 poles per annum on a single shift basis, with a current commitment of around 120,000 poles per annum we have untapped excess capacity available.

With the current UK market growing quickly through PFI contracts we are conscious of the need to increase manufacturing capacity to ensure that all of our customers needs can be satisfied. We believe that with this excess capacity we are best positioned to continue offering high levels of service in the future of all of our competitors.

Design
At Stainton Metal we take pride in the products we design and believe we offer a design and technical backup service which is second to none. We actively encourage customers to involve us in at the concept design stage and this close liaison should continue from manufacture right though to installation. We employ the latest design techniques, from
Autocad to Solidworks, to our own custom designed computer programmes.

Painting
Being the first company in the UK to offer hot dip galvanised columns as standard, the clear evidence from the market place suggests our policy was correct.

However we acknowledged some time ago that the market would still demand

the application of painting, either for aesthetics or corrosion protection. We have therefore invested heavily in our painting facility and now have over 10% of our manufacturing area dedicated to painting and last year painted over 30,000 lighting columns.

Stainless Steel
The use of Stainless steel to manufacture lighting columns is not a phenomenon as we with have a track record of manufacturing from this material going back 18 years. It is however a difficult material to work with and requires specialised manufacturing and design knowledge which can only be achieved through long term experience using this material. Some years ago we re-introduced this material back into the market place and full details of our product offering are available on this website.
